Medication Factsheet: Executive Summary

Therapeutic Medications:

The new VAC drug rules are not part of a complete no-drug policy but rather rules for the welfare of the horse.

Within the guidelines listed in the VAC rulebook, the listed therapeutic drugs can be administered by a veterinarian to a horse with a legitimate injury or illness within 24 hours of showing. For allowed dosage amounts, refer to the Guidelines listed in the next section.

It will be considered a rule violation if plasma samples contain more than one of the permitted Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) that are listed below.

The exception is Diclofenac (Surpass®) topical cream which may be combined with one other systemic NSAID listed below under Permitted Medications.

PLEASE NOTE: Though needless degeneration of joints aided by injudicious use of corticosteroids is a long-term concern with the use of corticosteroids, it is the masking of the pain by the presence of pharmacologic concentrations of corticosteroids sufficient to hide early anatomic disruption that is of most concern. Use of corticosteroids close to time of the event in sufficient doses to hide these predisposing disruptions of bone and cartilage puts horses and people at increased risk of serious injury. In addition, the practice of stacking (more than one steroid) is not permitted.

These guidelines for corticosteroids are based upon the administration of a single intra-articular or intravenous administration. Multiple joint injections and combining intra-articular medications may significantly increase withdrawal times.

The information in the VAC Medication Factsheet: Executive Summary Therapeutic Medications List does not constitute and is not a guarantee, warranty or assurance that the use of any of the therapeutic medications at the dosage and withdrawal time listed will not result in a positive post-event test. The VAC is not responsible for results differing in any way from those herein.

Use of this document and its information does not lessen or relieve any trainer’s responsibility for affirming that, during a horse show, a horse is free of any therapeutic medication listed in the rulebook, and for complying with provisions of the regulations.

Owners, trainers or any other persons responsible for the care of a horse are strongly advised to consult a veterinarian and the show veterinarian for guidance and advice on the use and withdrawal times of all therapeutic medications.

PLEASE NOTE: These guidelines are based upon the administration of a single medication. Combining medications may significantly affect withdrawal times, however, the practice of stacking (more than one steroid or NSAIDs) is not permitted.
